An error within the McAfee virus definition file prompted users to delete or quarantine popular software such as Adobe Update Manager, Dell, Google Toolbar Installer, Macromedia Flash Player, Windows XP and Microsoft Excel.

Apart from Microsoft Office files, the update attempted to remove files such as Dell OpenManage, Cygwin, perl, Sysinternals pstools suite.

The common files that triggered the incorrect identification are imjpinst.exe, usersid.exe (Windows XP), ecenter.exe (Dell), ntfstype.exe, adobeupdatemanager.exe and AdobeDownloadManager.exe (Adobe Manager), gtb2k1033.exe (Google Toolbar Installer), 43gcjvgahnu44.ths (Macromedia Flash Player 7.0 r19), excel.exe and graph.exe ( Microsoft Excel)

McAfee quickly recognised the problem and rolled out an updated definitions file just a few hours later. The error spanned all operating systems from Linux to OS X and Windows.

Users who mistakenly deleted software will have to fix their own computers. There is no software patch that will automatically restore the deleted programs; users will need to manually replace them from backup files.

Earlier, Microsoft AntiSpyware flagged Norton Anti-virus as being spyware.
