Ston is a small town located on the eastern tip of the of the Peljesac peninsula in Croatia. During our recent weekend trip to Neum, my friends and I decided to make a trip here, since it was close by. Ston is a tiny place, but well worth exploring. The main attraction (besides great food) is the huge stone wall that connects Ston to the nearby town called Mali Ston (Little Ston). You can walk on the wall all the way to the other city. Since we didn't have time for that we decided to explore the other sights of this old town on the Adriatic Sea.

A Walk Through Ston

It was midday when we parked our car in the nearby parking lot and headed out into the town, so there weren't that many people in the streets. As I said, Ston is not huge, but what it lacks in grandeur it makes up with small town charm: from cobblestone streets to old houses and buildings. It was a joy to explore.

Doors and Gateways

Throughout this post you will see many shots of doors and gateways. There are indeed a lot of interesting ones in the town, and I couldn't help myself but take as many pictures of them as I could. In some cases vegetation on the side of these entrances enriched the enjoyment of them.

Inside the Salt City of Ston

The city of Ston produces sea salt. We saw a sea salt plantage when leaving town, but access to it is forbidden. Its former value as a „salt city“ gets confirmed even today in those plants, which are the oldest active salt-works in the world. These salt works have remained faithful to the tradition and to the natural way of salt production which has not changed since remote ages.

The Walls of Ston

The Walls of Ston were known as the "European wall of China". The city plan of Dubrovnik was used as a model for Ston, but since Ston was built on prepared terrain, that model was more closely followed than Dubrovnik itself. In terms of infrastructure like water mains and sewers built in 1581, Ston was remarkably unique in Europe.

I saw this impressive building (i think it's private) with the gates opened. So I stepped inside for a moment to take some pictures. Luckily no one caught me. It seems like it's a monastary, but there is no sign on the front.

I hope you enjoyed our small trip to Ston. I think it's well worth a stop if you are on your way to Neum, Korcula or Dubrovnik.
