When John Wayne was in the process of making 1959’s “Rio Bravo” a young actor named Ty Hungerford tried to get the role of ‘Colorado’ Ryan but it had been promised to singer Ricky Nelson. Wayne had seen Ty at Paramount and was impressed with his appearance. He introduced Ty to director Howard Hawks and William T. Orr at Warner Brothers TV. They signed Ty to a contract had him change his last name to Hardin after western gunman John Wesley Hardin.
