I loved visiting Philadelphia and Atlantic City, but to be completely honest I was most looking forward to seeing the open road and ocean on my side. Those days of road tripping are most interesting and beautiful since you get to stop anywhere you find something nice. Embarking along the Atlantic Ocean in the
Mid-Atlantic USA, unfolded like a scenic tapestry of
coastal wonders. We set out on a drive that would lead us through the
enchanting landscapes of the Mid-Atlantic region. As the ocean waves
accompanied the route, each mile brought forth new vistas and hidden gems
waiting to be discovered. The ultimate destination awaited at the
southern tip of New Jersey – Cape May, a charming town with Victorian
architecture and pristine beaches. Join us as we share the highlights of
this coastal expedition. We had three days of coastal road trip fun, and this was the first day.
A Stop by Lucy the Elephant
Lucy the Elephant, standing tall and proud in Margate City, New Jersey,
is an iconic symbol of whimsy and architectural marvel. It was our first stop of the day, when we embarked from Atlantic City. This six-story
elephant-shaped building has captured the hearts of locals and visitors
alike since its construction in 1881.
Serving various purposes throughout the years, including a real estate office and a tavern, Lucy now stands as a beloved historical landmark and museum and is one of the oldest road-side attractions in the USA. The small town of Margate City is beautiful too and was completely empty on this sunny morning, since the summer season was long gone.
Breakfast at Uncle Bill's Pancake House
I was looking forward to breakfasts in little diners and similar places along the road. Uncle Bill's Pancake House in Ocean City just fit that bill! It is a cherished
breakfast haven that has been delighting locals and vacationers since
its establishment in 1962. Nestled near the famous Ocean City Boardwalk, it is known for its welcoming atmosphere and a menu brimming with
delectable breakfast options.
Uncle Bill's is particularly celebrated
for its fluffy, oversized pancakes. We had some and they were ok. I did enjoy my eggs and overall ambience of the place. There are a few locations of this place along the Jersey Shore.
Sea Isle City
Our road trip along the Atlantic Ocean brought us to the charming shores
of Sea Isle City, a hidden gem on the New Jersey coastline. Nestled
between the dunes and the sparkling Atlantic, Sea Isle City welcomed us
with its relaxed atmosphere and pristine beaches. The vibrant boardwalk
offered an array of quaint shops and eateries, providing the perfect
backdrop for a leisurely stroll. Most of the stores were closed, again because we visited during the off-season, but we didn't mind it. You really get to see the place when there are no people around.
With the sound of crashing waves in the background, we basked in the coastal serenity, enjoying the sun-kissed sands and the refreshing sea breeze. Sea Isle City proved to be a delightful stop on our journey, inviting us to savor the tranquility and beauty of this coastal retreat along our adventure. Also I couldn't believe the beautiful weather we were having in November.
Cape May
Cape May, the southernmost point of New Jersey, unfolded as a
picturesque stop during our Atlantic Ocean road trip, casting a spell with
its Victorian charm and coastal allure. The streets adorned with
impeccably preserved historic homes and the iconic Cape May Lighthouse
standing proudly against the horizon welcomed us into a bygone era.
Strolling along the beach, we marveled at the Cape May's panoramic views, the soothing symphony of waves, and the vibrant hues of the quaint late fall sky. The town's well-manicured gardens and charming boutiques added to the timeless elegance of the surroundings. Cape May's idyllic ambiance, combined with its rich history and scenic beauty, made for a highlight of that day. We had to take the Cape May ferry in order to cross to Rehoboth Beach (more on that in the next part), but I knew beforehand that this little town was worth an earlier stop.
As we wandered through its charming streets, we were transported to the
19th century, surrounded by a collection of meticulously preserved
Victorian homes adorned with intricate details and vibrant colors. The
town center's cobblestone streets were lined with quaint shops,
galleries, and inviting cafes, each housed in historic buildings that
added to the area's distinctive character. The iconic Washington Street
Mall, a pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare, beckoned us with its
tree-lined charm, offering a delightful shopping experience amid the
Victorian ambiance.
This was my first time trying salt water taffy. We got various flavors, and depending on which one I got they were actually good. I found the fruit flavored ones better then the caremel and chocolate ones.
Cape May Lighthouse
Perched majestically at the tip of Cape May, the Cape May Lighthouse is a
towering sentinel that has guided seafarers since 1859. The surrounding Cape May Point State Park provided a
serene setting for this maritime icon, offering opportunities for
nature walks and birdwatching. The Cape May Lighthouse, with its rich
maritime history and stunning vistas, remains a beacon of both practical
navigation and aesthetic wonder along the New Jersey coastline. I was only disappointed that it wasn't right on the shoreline but inland. Still it was a nice place to visit and see.
It was around 2 PM when we arrived at the Cape May Ferry Terminal waiting for our ferry. I was looking forward to the late afternoon on the ferry and enjoying the sea views. More from our first day and some sights from the second day along the coastline in the next part!
